The Foundation Stage

EYFS Intent

At Grove Lea Primary we aim to be the spark igniting each child’s passion for the very start of their learning journey. We encourage a love of learning, allowing access to the best opportunities to ensure we have stimulated and happy children. It is our intention that children develop and demonstrate our core values - caring, curious, courageous and collaborative. Our children deserve to be in a safe and happy learning environment where they can feel confident to grow and achieve. Our team support the children in knowing they can do anything they want to do, following our school moto, “If it is to be, it is up to me!”

From the offset secure relationships are formed with children and parents upon starting their learning journey. We value the importance of building trusting and secure relationships and being the foundations of the child’s educational journey. Our staff genuinely care and invest in each child as an individual and the families with whom we work collaboratively with. This is evident in the secure attachments we have with our children. Staff all greet children and parents/  carers at the start of each session, supporting the children to feel valued and be excited to arrive at school and eager to see what the day holds. We pride ourselves in being compassionate, approachable and supportive to not only children but parents and carers alike, always striving to go above and beyond for all.

Implementation

The children in our Early Years follow a unique curriculum. We understand that children begin their learning journey from different starting points and working at different stages in their development. The Early Years Foundation Stage both celebrates and builds upon this.

Our Curriculum has seven main areas of learning. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. The curriculum is divided into prime and specific areas.

The prime areas are:

• Communication and Language

• Physical development

• Personal, social and emotional development.

The specific areas are:

• Literacy

• Mathematics

• Understanding the world

• Expressive arts and design

A practical, play based approach to learning, based on the needs and interests of our children is delivered. The provision is purposefully planned for and enhanced to provide challenge during each theme and topic. The resources are stimulating and inviting allowing children to self-initiate their own learning. The children are the driving force in the themes taught and it is delivered through a combination of adult led and child initiated opportunities. Our provision is purposefully planned to encourage children to develop their learning independently through exploration and challenge.

Impact

Through high quality provision and teaching our children demonstrate the “Characteristics of Effective Learning”. They are engaged in learning and their enjoyment is apparent to all. It is evident that they value the importance of playing and learning, active learning and thinking critically. By developing the whole child, they have a wider understanding of the world around them and are able to celebrate and embrace differences between themselves and others.

Our children are ready and eager to learn, excited to see what each new day brings. During their time in the Early Years our children acquire a passion for learning and demonstrate confidence and pride in their own abilities. Their developing resilience instils in them that they can fulfil their aspirations and achieve. Further establishing our school moto into the hearts of the children, “If it is to be, it is up to me!” providing them with a secure foundation for their future learning journey.
